Obituary

Virginia Lee Burrow Councill, 107, of Tiptonville, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at her residence.

Virginia was born on Oct. 12, 1908 in Trenton, TN and attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (1927-1929) before being called back home due to the depression.  She married Lewis Alfred Councill of Thornton, AR on May 5, 1931.  Virginia and her husband, Alf, owned Councill Five and Ten Store in Tiptonville from 1950 to 1976.

An avid Bridge player, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tiptonville, the Women's Circle Group, several Bridge Clubs and was a lifetime member of the Tiptonville Women's Club.

Virginia was one of the founders of the Tiptonville Public Library and also served as a substitute teacher at the Margaret Newton Elementary School.

Virginia was vibrant to the end and could regale you with stories from almost every decade of the 20 th Century.  She had a ready smile and always had a kind word for everyone she met.  She witnessed many iconic events and innovations during her long life and never ceased to be amazed and delighted.

The family will receive visitors 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28 at the Presbyterian Church in Tiptonville.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28 at Oakland Cemetery in Trenton, TN with the Rev. Walter Lockhart officiating.


She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Carrie Lee Councill Riedmeyer of Memphis and Virginia Lou Councill Wynn of Wynnburg; grandchildren, Mary Haley (Richard) of Marblehead, MA, Carrie Stetler of Memphis; niece, Mary Burrow Moody of Austin, TX; nephews, Tom Burrow, Jr. (Sue) of Houston, TX, Lee L. Brewer (Martha) of Jackson, TN, five great nephews & ten great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Alfred Councill, her parents, Banks Mitchum and Carrie Lee Wade Burrow, five siblings; Mary Francis Clark Taylor, Sara Elizabeth Brewer, Tom Wade Burrow, Margaret Bridges, Carolyn Holmes Baker, grandson, Roland Guest Stetler III, niece, Mary Clark Blakeman, sons-in-law, James R. Riedmeyer and Prentiss Wynn and nephew by marriage Thomas Moody.


Pallbearers are Mike Hamra, Ed Sumara, Jason Crews, Billy Farmer, Scotty Johnson and John Foster Fields.

The family requests that memorials be sent to the First Presbyterian Church of Tiptonville or an organization of the donor's choice.


Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
