Bishop George "Tommy" Johnson, 84, of Dyersburg Tennessee passed away Saturday, October 10 th , 2020 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
He was born on August 10, 1936, in Dyersburg, TN, to the late George H. Johnson, and the late Myrtle Gurien Hill. In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Earl Johnson, and stepbrother, Bobby Hill.
Bishop Johnson pastored The Church of Jesus Christ, 815 South Main Ave, in Dyersburg for almost 27 years. Even after retiring as pastor, he continued working in the kingdom of God as long as his health allowed. He loved his family and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He traveled many miles to be with them every chance he could. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with all the grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Peggy Johnson; his four children; George Johnson, Jr. and wife Karen of Dyersburg, Kim McGehee and husband Jeff of Portage IN, Terri Dodd and husband Michael of Dyersburg, and Jimmy Johnson and wife Christy of Dyersburg. He is survived by a half-brother, Altas Hill, Jr. and wife Debra of Kenton, TN. He was "Papaw" to nine loving grandchildren; Leigh Ann Johnson Dutton (Mark) of Gloucester, VA, Army First Sergeant George Johnson III, "Trae" (Kayla) of El Paso, TX, Jeffrey "Michael" McGehee (BJ) of Portage, IN, John Michael Dodd (Alyssa) of Dyersburg, Army Staff Sergeant Joshua McGehee (Jessica) of Niceville, FL, Navy Petty Officer First Class Matthew McGehee (Ashley) of San Diego, CA, Mandi Johnson Dotson (Cody) of Dyersburg, Laura Beth Dodd Scales (Dwayne) of Dunnellon, FL, and Callie Johnson of Memphis, TN; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
A private funeral service, for family and church members only, will be held Tuesday, October 13 th , at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with sons-in-law Rev. Michael Dodd and Jeff McGehee officiating. Interment will follow immediately at Fairview cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Dodd, Cody Dotson, Dwayne Scales, Altas Hill Jr., Sammy McGuire, Eric Gilbert, Caleb Spain, and Robert Ramey. Honorary pallbearers include Trae Johnson, Michael McGehee, Joey Conley, Matt McGehee, Josh McGehee, and Mark Dutton.
Due to Covid everyone is asked to wear masks and observe social distancing.
