Obituary

Mr. Thomas Martin Butler, of Dyersburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Okeena Health and Rehabilitation.

Tom was born on January 19, 1944, to the late Leonard and Oleda Butler. While he wore many hats throughout his life — serving as a business administrator, contractor, builder, police officer and later a gospel minister; the roles he cherished most were those of devoted Christian, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

A lifelong member of Oak Grove Church of Christ, Tom faithfully served the Lord through teaching, preaching, and living out his faith each day. He was a godly man whose life reflected kindness, hard work, and unwavering love for his family. His greatest joy came not from accomplishments, but from the people he loved most.

Tom treasured the simple moments in life — family fish fries gathered around the table, trips to the family lakehouse, evenings spent on the deck overlooking the lake, and rides on his John Deere Gator with his faithful sidekick, Pepper. Whether working in the garden, on the farm, or simply spending time with those he loved, he made everyone around him feel cared for and welcome.

Known lovingly as Papa he leaves behind a legacy of faith, strength, and deep devotion to family that will continue for generations. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life, and he never missed an opportunity to love, encourage, and support them.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Denise Butler; his sons, Joe Erwin (Rachel) and Johnny Butler (Tina); his brother, Dan Butler (Pam); and his sister, Mayfair Seaton.

He was deeply loved by his grandchildren: Zack (Brittany), Brittly (Jerome), Madison (Luke), Taylor (Brianna), Harrison (Peyton), Caleigh (Hunter), Claire, Kyle, and Kayla; and by his great-grandchildren: Mya, Olivia, Axel, Grayson, Annalise, Oliver, Juliette, Benjamin, Henry, and Charles.

He is preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law; Brett and Tracy Butler, his brothers; Henry and Paul Butler, and his parents.

Tom’s life was a beautiful example of faith, family, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his family finds comfort in knowing he is now at peace with the Lord he faithfully served.
