Samuel "Sam" Hummer, a beloved resident of Dyersburg, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his residence on July 4, 2026, at the age of 77. He was born on May 8, 1949, in Dyersburg to the late, William Harry Hummer and Artie Lurlene Hollis Hummer. Sam's life was rooted deeply in the community he cherished and served throughout his years.

A proud 1968 graduate of Dyersburg High School, Sam distinguished himself early as class president. His leadership, charisma, and care for his classmates were evident even then; he took great joy in keeping his class connected, working tirelessly to organize reunions that became treasured gatherings for many. As drum major in the Dyersburg High School Band, his enthusiasm for music and camaraderie found its first flourishing, laying the groundwork for a lifelong passion.

Sam's love of music extended far beyond high school. He played the saxophone in the band the Wandering Five and, in 1983, lent his talents to the Smoke Ridge Boys. These musical pursuits brought joy not only to him but to countless family, friends, and community members. He was especially fond of the sounds of the 1950s and 1960s, an era that echoed through the many tunes he enjoyed and shared. Friends recall his delight in old movies, his infectious laughter, and the pranks that enlivened gatherings—Sam was, indeed, a devoted prankster known for his playful spirit.

His deep faith was reflected in his contributions to Hillcrest Baptist Church, where he served as both a member and Deacon. Sam sang in the church choir and pitched for the church’s softball team, forging bonds through music, ministry, and sport. He sometimes also attended Newbern First Baptist Church, always finding ways to remain connected to his faith community.

After serving his country proudly in the United States Air Force, Sam continued to give back through his professional life. He worked as an account executive for the State Gazette, demonstrating dedication and reliability. Even after retirement, his commitment to service remained unwavering as he took on the role of delivering medicine for C&C Pharmacy, ensuring the well-being of others with compassion and kindness.

But above all his achievements, the heart of Sam’s world was his family, with a special love reserved for his grandchildren. Known affectionately as “Papaw,” Sam delighted in every moment spent with his family, his greatest legacy being the dedication and love he showed them. His warmth, humor, and steadfastness remain enduring gifts to all who knew and loved him.
