Max Wood, 81, of Dyersburg, passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Methodist LeBonheur Germantown Hospital.

He was born on April 7, 1935 in Dyersburg, TN, to the late A.A. Wood and the late Annie Mae Jackson Wood. Max was a retired Chief in the U.S. Navy, serving his country for 23 years. He served during the Vietnam War. He worked as the Dyer County Veteran's Assistance Officer, where he worked for 20 years. Mr. Wood was a member of Phillips Street Church of Christ, was a member of the American Legion and a member of the Veterans of Foreign War.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with Mr. Andy Brewer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors from 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dyersburg Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, June Wood of Dyersburg; his children, Ted Wood of Phoenix, AZ, Liz Horner and husband, Robert, of Dyersburg and Rob Wood and wife, Jennifer, of Dyersburg; two sisters, Patsy Stephens of Dyersburg and Winnie Atkins of San Pierre, IN; a brother, Jack Wood of Jackson; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister; and two brothers.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Wood, Joe Wood, Ryan Wood, Randy Stephens, Pete Welch, Jimmy Welch, Lynn Welch, Tim Ware and Stan Welch.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Phillips Street Church of Christ, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the American Legion.
