Obituary

Kathleen Hope Chitwood of Dyersburg, TN, age 106, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at West Tennessee Healthcare Dyersburg Hospital.

She was born September 20, 1916, in Dyer County, to the late Johnny Columbus and Hilda Collins Johns. She grew up in Dyer County and was a graduate of Newbern High School Class of 1933. Kathleen was united in marriage to Bracken Alfonsa "Jack" Chitwood on February 22, 1941, in Sikeston, MO.

Mrs. Chitwood was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a faithful christian. She was a voracious reader, an excellent cook and had a passion for flower gardening. Before her retirement, she spent her working years as a sales associate for Schlesinger's Style Shop and at Long & Gibsons Pharmacy. Her family remembers her greatest talent as being a loving mother and grandmother. In her own written words, recalling her life, she said, "my advice to anyone is: be fair and honest, have integrity, go to church and enjoy the simple things in life!!"

A private family graveside service will be held for Kathleen on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Fairview Cemetery. Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by her children, John Chitwood (Karla), Janice Chitwood Moore and David Chitwood (Rita), all of Dyersburg, TN; six grandchildren, Bracken Chitwood, U.S. Navy Captain Russell Lee Moore III, Jordan Moore Willis, Amy Chitwood, Adam Chitwood and Anna Chitwood Hatch; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Chitwood; and her son-in-law, Judge Russell Lee Moore, Jr.

The family asks that memorials be directed to the McIver's Grant Public Library, 410 West Court Street, Dyersburg, TN 38024.

To quote one who appears to have experienced an equal loss, "Remembering you will be easy. I'll do it everyday, but there is an ache within my heart that will never go away".
