Reed, Jr.
December 14, 1945 – July 13, 2025
Mr. John Reed, Jr. of Dyersburg, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2025 at his home. He was born December 14, 1945 to the late John Reed, Sr. and Mattie Fields Reed.
John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Tucker Reed, a son James Tucker Reed and wife, Elizabeth Ann of Oak Ridge, TN, a daughter Mary Elizabeth Reed of Dyersburg and a sister Beverly Joy Marsh and husband, Russ of Arlington, TN. He was greatly loved as "PaPa John" by his grandchildren, Nyla Carson of Scottsboro, AL, Tucker Reed and Alex Green of Oak Ridge, TN. He is preceded in death by his parents Dr. John H. and Nell Reed, his parents and a son John Mark Reed.
John was a 1963 graduate of Dyersburg High School and in 1968, he graduated at the top of his class in Electrical Engineering from The University of Tennessee. He spent his career working as an electrical process engineer. Early on, he worked for Texas Instruments, helping develop the first Advanced Scientific Computer. Later, he moved to Oak Ridge, TN to work for K25 Gasseous Diffusion Plant, Y12 Uranium Processing Facility and the Spallation Neutron Source. His passion for mathematics helped him in his work in electrical automation. One of his favorite projects was when he was able to put the clocks and bell back into operation on the Dyer County Courthouse. He was able to trace his family heritage far back to Europe through his studies of genealogy and history. He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Dyersburg and later All Saints Anglican Church in Jackson, TN, where he often sang in the choirs, and participated in the Dyersburg Choral Society. He was active in the Men's Prayer Breakfast at First United Methodist church for many years, even walking after he stopped driving. He was a lover of animals, especially his cats Phineas, Ferb, Tyrus, Rocky and Ruby Lee. John will be remembered for his intellect, passionate studies in various areas and as a Godly man, friend and co-worker.
Visitation will be held at Dyersburg Funeral Home on Thursday, July 17, 2025 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services, conducted by Fr. Wes Gristy, will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Anglican Church, 212 McLellan Rd, Jackson, TN 38305. Gathering for family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow later in the afternoon at Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg, TN.
John would be pleased to know that memorials were directed to the work of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital www.stjude.org or Paws to Care Animal Rescue www.pawstocare.org in lieu of flowers.
