John Anderson Johnston, Jr., born on February 28, 1934 in Haywood County, passed away at age 80, on Monday, February 2, 2015 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
He graduated from Dyersburg High School in 1952. After high school he served in the United States Army. After leaving the Army, he went into the family business, selling International Harvester tractors and farming. He spent every day of his life doing the thing he loved most, farming his land. He enjoyed his morning coffee friends and spending time in the duck blind. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Anderson Johnston and "Mamie" Johnston.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jan Byrd Johnston; his three daughters, Ellen Taylor (Mike) of Newnan, GA, Mary Kate Norrie (David) of Dunnellon, FL and Elizabeth Underwood (Eddie) of Hoover, AL. He is survived by four grandchildren, John Taylor, Ivy Underwood, Mary Grace Underwood and Summer Norrie. His grandchildren called him "Papa John" and remember their special days with him at the farm. He is also survived by his sister, Lillie Bright Hensley (Deek); and nieces and nephews. John is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eddie and Royce Harris of Humboldt, who remembered him with joy and laughter. He is remembered with fondness by his nieces and nephews as "Uncle Johnny".
His morning breakfast buddies, his classmates, his farm family, his Moose Lodge friends, his church, and his family will miss him.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, February 6th at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Wally Bumpas officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Friday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Milton Magee, Billy Cloar, Darrell Gillon, Mike Ray, Barry Frazier, Tommy Cross, Chuck Smith, Joe Smith, J.C. Castellaw, Bill Newsom, Jack Pate and Bo Riggs.
