Obituary

Joe Alan Criswell, 83, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at his residence.

In his life, Joe had many pursuits and adventures, to include serving in the Navy in World War II and later in the Army; a professional wrestling career, working with the Dyersburg Police Department and the Dyersburg Fire Department. He helped to start the Dyer County Volunteer Conservation Club and once even walked from Dyersburg to Chattanooga to bring attention to the Tennessee Conservation League. No one could train a coon dog or raise a garden better than Joe. He was always looking for a neighbor or friend who could use his help.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Virginia Jo Criswell; two brothers, Thomas R. Criswell, Sr. and William Glen Criswell, both of Dyersburg; two sisters, Stella June Hopper of Gleason, and Gwen Criswell, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Jettie Criswell.

A small graveside service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Sorrell's Chapel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Dyer County Humane Society.
