Obituary

James Doc Hendren, 83, of Dyersburg, TN, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at his residence.

Doc was born on October 26, 1933 on the hilltop of the family farm, where he lived until his death. He was a retired farmer, carpenter and restaurant owner. He also owned one of the 10 Century Farms in Dyer County. In 1950, Doc introduced the first tractor and in 1957 the first cotton picker in the Dyer County Area. Doc and his wife, Mary, owned the Juke Box Cafe, also known as the "Hog Trough". Doc was a Historian, an avid gardener and loved to fish and hunt. His pride and joy were his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his two cats, Queenie and Cooper. Anytime you saw Doc, he always had a kind word, a huge smile and wearing his cowboy hat.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with Bro. Brent Pirece officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Dyersburg Funeral Home, where they will be celebrating his 84th birthday.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Covington-Hendren of Dyersburg; four daughters, Kimberly Ann Covington (Rickey Barham), of Dyersburg, Tonya S. Covington (George Evans) of Lexington, Lynn Etta McDivitt (John Tom) of Dyersburg and Regina Michelle Wade (Thomas Minley) of Darden; three sons, Jimmy Hendren (Kelli Sexton) of Dyersburg, Bobby Hendren of Alamo and Junior Pratt of Flint, MI; two adopted sons, Rickey Barham and Scottie Ross (Kellie), all of Dyersburg; two sisters, Rosyln Baker of Smithville and Tena Viloudaki of Seattle, WA; twelve grandchildren, Nick Blalock (Andrea), Brooke Creasy (Jason), Emily Blalock (Andrew Dudas), Bradley Hopgood (Alicia), Brandon Hopgood, Misty Vestal (Mitch), Christy Phillips, Heather Hendren, Nina Climer, Zack Hendren, Evan Hendren, Todd Essary; and fourteen great-grandchildren, Mason & Maddox Dudas, Dalton Noles, Alton & Ella Creasy, Chloe Hopgood, Isaiah and Rachel Ross, John Michael & Jacob Garrett, Jessalynn Vestal, Katie Beth Wade, Lucas Henley Essary and Bryleigh Blalock.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Taylor Hendren and Matt Etta Spraggins Hendren; and two sons, Roger Wayne Hendren and Jeffery Lane Hendren.

Pallbearers will be Isaiah Scottie Ross, Dalton Lee Noles, Nicholas Paul Blalock, Brandon Heath Hopgood, Bradley Keith Hopgood and Lynn Etta McDivitt. Honorary pallbearers will be Andrew Kurstin Dudas, Rickey S. Barham, Randy G. Evans and Gary Ray.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Dyersburg/Dyer County Humane Society, 1120 East Court Street, Dyersburg, TN 38024.
