Dr. James Parker Green, 85, died on April 17, 2013 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Dyersburg, Tennessee on November 18, 1927, son of the late Parker and Anna Green. He graduated from Dyersburg High School and attended Vanderbilt University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. After graduating from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, he entered the U.S. Army, serving as a 1st lieutenant in Korea and at Fort Hamilton, New York. Following his military service, he practiced general dentistry in Dyersburg for 48 years, receiving a Governor's award for his dental care of indigent children.
He was a lifelong member of the Dyersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he served as treasurer and was a member of the building committee, board of elders, and board of trustees. Dr. Green was a Boy Scout leader, served as chairman of the Davy Crockett district and earned the Silver award. He was a member of the Dyersburg Rotary Club for 25 years, serving as president and secretary, and was a recipient of the Paul Harris award. He served as chairman of the Dyersburg planning commission.
Dr. Green is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Jo Suggs Green; daughter, Elaine and husband Dr. Bill Woods; son, James P. Green, Jr.; grandson, Will Woods and wife Phylinda; grandson, Sam Woods; sister, Ann Green Yates; and brother, Dr. Dan Green and wife Beverly.
Services will be held at the Dyersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Larry Blakeburn officiating. Entombment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Danny Dedmon, John Ford, John Hamilton, Jim Hamilton, Rob Kerr, William Mallard, Jimmy Moody and Green Smitheal will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Jack Todd, Dr. John Tally, Tom Jayroe, Ralph Lawson, John Moore, Mickey Mims and Gerald Newbill as well as all Dyersburg Rotarians. Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Dyersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
