George Ben Johnson, 86, of Dyersburg, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center.
He was retired as Senior Vice-President at First Citizens National Bank after working there for 39 years. Mr. Johnson was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served as president of the Outpost Sunday School Class. He developed the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen and for many years served as Treasurer for the Salvation Army and the Thrift Store. He was also a member of the Dyersburg Lion's Club, past member of the Civitan Club, Dyer County Board of Education, Dyersburg City Alderman, and the Exchange Club where he served as President. He and his wife, Sue Dean, have been Dyer County Hosta Growers for about ten years and former members of the Memphis Hosta Society. He enjoyed fishing, playing Rook, and traveling. Mr Johnson was a U. S. Army veteran serving the Korean era.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with Dr. David Russell officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Dyersburg Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Dean Johnson of Dyersburg; two daughters, Amy Jones (Wayne) of Obion and Ann Strayhorn (Jeff) of Dyersburg; two grandchildren, Grayson Jones and Ben Strayhorn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Beulah Johnson; one sister, Sue Pierce; and four brothers, Clyde, John B., Robert, and Carroll Johnson.
Pallbearers will be Jack Wesson, Kim Peckenpaugh, Ben Ragan, Ralph Henson, Harold James and Hughes Clardy. Honorary pallbearer will be John T. Yarbro.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The First United Methodist Church.
