Fred
Wittber
August 17, 1937 – March 28, 2025
Fred Wittber, 87, of Dyersburg, TN, died peacefully at The Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt, TN on March 28, 2025.
He was known for his love of friends, fast cars, snow-skiing, cooking, roller-coasters, bridge, tennis, duck-hunting, and fishing. Fred was born in Chicago, IL on August 17,1937, the only child of Jeanette and Fritz Wittber. He attended The University of Illinois dental school before serving as a dentist in the U.S. Navy in Millington for 2 years. There he met Mary Ann Jernnigan to whom he was married for 60 years. They lived in Jacksonville, IL for 10 years before moving to Mary Ann's home town of Dyersburg. Fred lived in Dyersburg for most of his life where he practiced dentistry, and he and Mary Ann raised their four children. He was a member of the Rotary Club and Ducks Unlimited and was involved with The Boy Scouts of America.
He leaves behind his best buddies: Jim Horn, Jim Green, Gene Brander, Bob Newbill, Murry Moore, Bill Boehmler and Keith Chism. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann, four children and their families: Glynn Wittber, John Wittber and wife, Ami, (Joshua, Glynn Rachel), Fred Wittber and wife, Lauren, (Mary Marshall), Becky Rothrock (Abby); and a cousin, Joan Dubanowski and husband, Dick, (Matt, Maile) whom he loved like a sister.
Fred will be remembered for his zest for life and all things fun, his merciless teasing of those he loved, his stories, his "punny" sense of humor, and his stubborn determination and strength. He was welcoming, generous, stoic, sarcastic, accepting, and a good friend to all. He was loved by everyone he met, and he touched the lives of many, particularly toward the end. Good thing he didn't have to take an airplane there, but no doubt he is now in a better place, where there is no such thing as arthritis or dialysis, every bridge hand is a slam, every tennis shot is a winner, the lakes and streams are full of walleye and trout and Derailer is always groomed.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation will be directed by Dyersburg Funeral Home. His remains will be distributed in some of his favorite places: Winter Park, CO, The White River in AR, and One Pine Lake in Ontario, Canada. A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests you send your favorite Big Fred photo to fjwittber@gmail.com. Donations can be made to Alexandria Place Assisted Living in Jackson, The Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt, or The Boy Scouts of America.
