Dr. Elton King, husband of Nelda Toland Thompson King, passed away May 9, 2021 at the age of 85.
Elton Aaron King was born November 27, 1935, to Edna Anderson King and David Clark King, the youngest of five children. He graduated with honors from Kenton High School in Kenton, TN. He attended the University of Tennessee, Martin, TN. While there, he was the President of The Liberal Arts Club, was on the Dean's List all quarters, was named "Who's Who in Colleges and Universities", was on the Tennis Team and was in the ROTC.
Dr. King was accepted to the Medical School of UT Memphis in January 1956 and graduated in December 1959. While in school, he worked at Shelby County Hospital and Campbell's Clinic. He had 1 year internship and 3 years residency in OB/GYN at Mid-State Baptist Hospital from January 1959 to December 31, 1964, and was named Chief Resident in 1963. He received some Resident training at Vanderbilt Hospital.
Dr. King began private practice in Dyersburg, TN in January 1964 with Doctors Moore and Kerr. He was named Chief of OB/GYN, was Chief of Staff in 1966 at Parkview Hospital. Dr. King was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966 and served two years in Ft. Polk, LA. He received an honorable discharge as Captain. In 1968, he returned to Dyersburg and joined with Dr. Robert Harrington to form the Women's Clinic of Dyersburg. He remained President of the Women's Clinic of Dyersburg until his retirement in 1997. Dr. King helped established the first Family Planning Clinic in the Dyer County Health Department. He passed the Boards and became Diplomat of the American Society of OB/GYN in 1967.
Dr. King was a member of First Baptist Church of Dyersburg, TN. He helped establish the Forked Deer Antique Automobile Club and was a long time board member. He was on the board of Mid-America Auto Club (a national organization for the preservation of antique automobiles) and served as President in 1984.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 16, 2021 in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Hickman officiating. A private family burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Dyersburg Funeral Home.
Dr. King was married to Carolyn Joyce Bell King, who predeceased him. Together they had four children who survive him, Gerald King (Linda) of Huntsville, AL, Janice Shults (Eddie) of Dyersburg, TN, Jennifer Powers (Rick) of Rossville, TN and Julie Norville (Rusty) of Dyersburg, TN; eight grandchildren, Megan Shults Matheson, Mallory Shults, Aaron King, Kelsey King Miller (Drew), Jonathan Powers (Taylor), Clark Powers (Emily), Sarah Norville Elmore (Evan), and Matt Norville (Kate); and three great-grandchildren, Cooper Matheson, Thomas Elmore and Lucy Elmore.
Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice.
