Edgar Shults, Jr.

Mr. Edgar Shults, Jr. of Dyersburg, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2026, in Memphis, TN. Edgar was born in Dyersburg on December 18, 1936, to the late Bea and Edgar Shults, Sr. He worked for many years in sales for Colonial Rubber Works and loved preserving memories of local events, as owner of Ed’s Video Productions. In his later years he enjoyed working as a courier and driver for the Independent Radiology Group in Dyersburg.  

Edgar had a true passion for the people in his community, and his priorities of Faith, Family and values of Boy Scouting were evident in all he did. He was a long-time member of Phillips Street Church of Christ, where he was a Deacon, Elder, Bible teacher, and filled in to preach at his congregation (and others) as needed. He also served as a youth minister even before it became an official title.

His family focus was evident in his support of his grandchildren and great-grandson’s activities. He may not have been a sports fan, but he was always a Megan, Mallory, Spenser and especially Cooper fan! He believed in supporting local children through the work of the Dyersburg Kiwanis Club which he served as president. The local Daughters of the American Revolution recognized him with the Medal of Patriotism. He was honored to be the Grand Marshall of the Christmas Parade in 2006. In 2021, Dyersburg High School inducted him into the Hall of Honor for his service in the community.

Edgar is fondly remembered for his leadership as a local Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. His involvement started in Finley, TN and later moved to Dyersburg, where he served as Scoutmaster for Troop 88 sponsored by First Baptist Church for 53 years and later for the “Minutemen” of Troop 168 sponsored by the National Guard, retiring after 69 years of service. His tenure saw 217 young men earn the rank of Eagle Scout. They, and many other scouts, would grow up to lead families, businesses and communities, relying on the values they had learned to live out through the activities of Scouting. Edgar proudly served his country in the United States Naval Air Reserves for eight years.

Through the time he invested in young people through his faith, his community and the young men of Dyersburg, Edgar leaves a legacy that will positively impact our world for years to come.

Edgar is survived by his sons, Edgar Shults, III “Eddie” and wife, Janice, Jeff Shults and wife, Lesa, his grandchildren; Megan Shults Matheson, Mallory Shults and Spenser Shults and great-grandson Cooper Knox Matheson. He is preceded in death by his parents Edgar Shults, Sr. and Vera “Bea” Ledford Shults and his beloved wife, of 61 years, Peggy Bryan Shults.

Funeral services for Mr. Edgar Shults will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Phillips Street Church of Christ, led by Mr. Mark Johnston, Mr. Andy Brewer, Mr. Stephen Sutton, Mr. Joe VanDyke, Mr. Brodie Cupples Mr. Jeff Lay and Cooper Matheson. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg with Kyle Caton, Paul and Mark Anderson, Carmen and Patrick Cupples, Chad and Craig Barron and Tommy Eison honored to serve as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Edgar’s long-time Assistant Scoutmasters Brodie Cupples and Phil Twilla, other scout leaders and the former scouts of Troops 88 and 168.

The family request that memorials be directed to support the work of the Dyersburg Kiwanis Club, benefitting the children of Dyersburg and Dyer County.
