Donald Wayne Viar

Donald Wayne Viar, 80, of Finley, TN, passed away on September 16, 2026, at his residence. He was born on November 28, 1945, in Dyersburg, Tennessee.

Donald will be remembered as a self-employed farmer whose life was closely tied to the land and to the outdoors he loved so well. He was also a former supervisor with Oldberg Manufacturing, and throughout his life he was known as an avid outdoorsman, a devoted duck hunter, and a man who loved being at the Mississippi River Bottoms. He proudly served in the United States Air Force as an A1C during the Vietnam War Era, a service that remained an important part of his life and legacy.

Those who knew Donald will remember his easy way with animals and the special bond he shared with his K-9 companion, Lucy. He loved to ride his side by side with Lucy by his side, and that simple joy reflected the kind of life he treasured most. He was often described as a dog whisperer, and he had a gift for understanding both animals and people. He was also a great storyteller, someone who could hold the attention of family and friends with a tale well told and a warm, familiar presence.

He is survived by Ellaine Hollingsworth of Finley, TN, his companion of 20 years. He also leaves behind his daughters, Dee Viar of Barnhart, MO, and Jennifer Viar Young and her husband, Jamie, of Halls, TN. Donald is also survived by his brother, Cecil “Buddy” Viar and his wife, Shirley, of Dyersburg, TN; his sisters, Faye Porter of Humboldt, TN, and Brenda Thurman of Miramar Beach, FL; his grandchildren, Trey Bond, Katelyn Viar and Anna Viar; and his great-grandchildren, Serenity Bond and Richie Bond. Each of them carries forward treasured memories of his life, his stories, and the steady presence he brought to those he loved.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Burl Viar; his mother, Alma Seratt Viar; his brother, Johnny Viar; and his sisters, Joy Bumpious and Luna Bell Gaskins.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Dyersburg Funeral Home, 420 US-51 Bypass W, Dyersburg, Tennessee 38024. Cremation services are under the direction of Dyersburg Funeral Home.

Donald Wayne Viar will be remembered with love for his service to his country, his deep appreciation for the outdoors, and the many stories and moments he shared with those around him. His memory will remain a lasting blessing to his family and friends.
