Obituary

Dennis James Hubbard, 78, of Friendship, TN walked into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

Born August 14, 1946, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to the late Claude Hubbard and Annette Fromm. After graduating from Marshalltown High School in 1964, Dennis made his way to Union University in Jackson, TN, where he met his future wife, Lamar Ann White, and was a member of the Lambda Zeta Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha. After Dennis and Ann married in 1967, he began his service in the United States Air Force, which took them to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX; Upper Heyford Air Force Base in Oxfordshire, England; and Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC. In 1970, Dennis and Ann settled in Ann's hometown of Friendship to raise a family, and Dennis returned to Union and completed his degree in Chemistry in 1973. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1974.

Dennis was a lifelong learner, voracious reader, and a Memphis Tiger fan. He had a love of flying and obtained both his pilot and helicopter licenses. A man with many interests, Dennis pursued a variety of professional opportunities, including roles as a Friendship High School Ag Teacher and with MetLife Insurance and Dyersburg Fabrics. Building on his skills to repair nearly anything that was broken, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) in 1994 and went on to obtain his Professional Engineering certification. Dennis utilized his skills working for H&M Company of Jackson and A2H Engineers in Lakeland, TN.  He served on the Board of the Bank of Friendship before it was sold.

Above all, Dennis loved the Lord and was a faithful servant. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Dyersburg, having served as a Deacon, Sunday School and Life Group teacher, and member of the choir. Dennis found passion as a founding member of the Damascus Project of Dyersburg and in sharing scripture daily with his children and grandchildren.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lamar Ann White Hubbard; son Matthew White Hubbard and wife Angela of Brentwood, TN; daughter Tessa Nicole Hubbard Bowling and husband Shane of Friendship; grandchildren Coleman Hubbard of Brentwood and Avery Bowling of Friendship; brother and sister-in-law David and Sharleen Hubbard of Parkersburg, Iowa, and sister and brother-in-law Debbie and Jon Christensen of St. Louis, MO, and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Dr. Lamar A. White; and mother-in-law, Polly White.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 1, at First Baptist Church of Dyersburg, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 12:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Mike Hickman, followed by a private interment in Fairview Cemetery with military honors. Active pallbearers are Matthew Hubbard, Coleman Hubbard, Shane Bowling, Kent Morris, Gene Smith, Sammy Tickle, Ham York Haley, Blake Haley, and Austin Evans. Honorary pallbearers are Casey Burnett, Danny Gwinn, and members of the Seekers and Biblos Life Groups. The family is grateful for the care and service provided by DaVita Dialysis Clinic, the Jackson Clinic, and Amedisys Home Health.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Damascus Project of Dyersburg or First Baptist Church of Dyersburg.
