Obituary

Mr. Dennis Ray Howerton, of Dyersburg, passed away at his home on March 24, 2026.

He was born in Tiptonville, TN on September 29, 1946 to the late Carlis and Opal Howerton. Dennis proudly served in the United States Air Force and retired after a career of over 20 years. His service included time spent as a helicopter pilot, flying search and rescue missions, a small-arms instructor, a flight instructor at the Columbus Air Force Base and later as a Detachment Commander at the Blytheville Air Force Base. His love of flying was always a part of his life, even into his later years. He was always active in sports and activities like golf. He pursued higher education, earning Degrees in Business Administration and Biological Science and was a self-employed businessman. Dennis was a devoted husband and father, who also held his Christian faith at the forefront of his life.

Dennis is survived by his wife, of 58 years, Penny Gail Argo Howerton; a son, Jacob Howerton and partner, Kendall Valenti, both of Dyersburg; a daughter, Amy Beth Charleton and husband, Charles, of Johnson City, TN; as well as his brother, Carl Edward Howerton; and half-sister Sarah Ring. He was greatly loved as "Big-Guy" by his grandson, Benjamin Matthew Merritt.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Carlis Emery Howerton and Opal Inez Mayo Howerton; and his half-brothers Michael and Curtis Howerton.

Cremation services are in care of Dyersburg Funeral Home.
