Daniel Purvis Lay, 95, of Ridgely, TN passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at his residence.

Daniel was born on July 22, 1926, in Bogota, TN, to the late, Dan and Myrtle Eaton Lay. He was a retired farmer and was a member of West Dyersburg Church of Christ. He served as an elder at the Cat Corner Church and then went on to serve as elder for 22 years at West Dyersburg Church of Christ. Daniel served on the Board of the State of Tennessee Soil Conservation for 12 years, the Dyer County Soil Conservation and the Bogota Drainage Boards. He served as director on the Board for Farm Bureau, the PCA, FHA and Reelfoot Youth Camp. Daniel proudly served his country in the Army Air Force during WWII and the Korean War.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, August 6, 2021 at West Dyersburg Church of Christ with Mr. Jim Chamblee and Mr. Rick Crawford officiating. Burial will be in New Haven Cemetery. Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

The family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, August 5, 2021 at West Dyersburg Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Rubye Lee Nichols Lay of Ridgely, TN; two daughters, Sandra Lay Bennett (Steve) of Dyersburg, TN and Amy Lay Humphrey of Ridgely, TN; five grandchildren, Amanda Bennett Poplin (Chris), Zachary Bennett (Brittany), Matthew Humphrey (Chloe), Justin Humphrey and Tucker Humphrey; eight great-grandchildren, Rylee Poplin, Mason Poplin, Emma Josephine Poplin, Jed Humphrey, Lenny Humphrey, Layla Doyle Forsythe (Zach), Gracelyn Humphrey and Amelia Bennett; and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Lay.

In addition to his parents, Daniel was preceded in death by a son, Terry Stephen Lay; a son-in-law, Mike Humphrey; brothers Jesse Lay (Rachel), twins: Otto and Plato Lay, Cleo Lay and twin sister, Leo Hunt (Estie), J.D. Lay (Lois); sisters, Dorothy Cantrell (Wesley), Bessie Walker (Bobby), Cora Mae Roberson (Yvonne); and an adopted cousin, Billy Lay.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Humphrey, Justin Humphrey, Zachary Bennett, Chris Poplin, Zach Forsythe and T.J. Minley. Honorary pallbearers will be Elders of West Dyersburg Church of Christ.
