Carlton Duke Hayes, 81, of Tiptonville, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at his residence.
Duke wore many hats. He was a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a ball player, farmer, store owner, electrician and a carpenter. He was a county commissioner for 12 years. He was a sports person and liked to hunt and fish. He was a river worker and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. Most of all, he was a Christian and a member of Jones Chapel Church of Christ. Duke was a good friend to all.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jones Chapel Church of Christ with Mr. Lonnie Grady and Mr. Wilford Mobley officiating. Burial will be in Cronanville Cemetery. Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
The family will receive visitors from 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Sue Hayes of Tiptonville; three children, Carlton "Tony" Hayes and Sherry Hayes, both of Tiptonville and Judy Hayes of Southaven, MS; a daughter-in-law, Becky Hayes; seven grandchildren, Shelley Heathcock and husband, Scotty, Jeremy Stephenson, Suellen Delaughter and husband, Will, Christie Hayes, Alabama Douglas, Tiffany Spicer and Breeanna Watson; fifteen great-grandchildren, Hope Stephenson, Zoey Stephenson, Tyler Chesser, Matthew Chesser, J.J. Smith, Kaylee Smith, Donavan Delaughter, Emily Delaughter, Dominic Delaughter, Elliot Delaughter, Taylor Heathcock, Alex Heathcock, Trey Spicer, Dillion Spicer and Jaden Watson; and four brothers, Robert "Tom" Hayes and wife, Janice, and Jessie "Pop" Hayes and wife, Sue, all of Tiptonville, Curtis Hayes and wife, Gwen, and Bill Hayes, all of Martin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Ora May Hayes; three sisters, Marie Hayes Brady, Nora Lee Cashon and Birdie May Pierce; and five brothers, Sam Hayes, Milton "Pete" Hayes, Jack Hayes, Jr., Denon "Dill" Hayes and James Hatton Hayes.
Pallbearers will be Nicky Hayes, Jr., Mark Hayes, Shelby Barker, Jr., Caleb Hayes, William Whitson and Scotty Heathcock. Honorary pallbearers will be David Meeks, Winston Whitson, Shelby Barker, Sr. and David Salmon.
