Betty Rutledge
Cooper
December 9, 1935 – May 4, 2025
Betty Cooper, affectionately known to hundreds of students as "Mrs. Betty," passed away peacefully on the morning of May 4, 2025, in her hometown of Dyersburg, Tennessee. She was 89.
Born in December 1935 and raised in Dyersburg, Betty began playing the piano at the age of seven. What started as a childhood pursuit eventually grew into a lifelong calling. Over the span of more than three decades, she taught piano to over 600 students, each of whom she touched with her deep passion for music, patient instruction, and caring spirit.
A graduate of Dyersburg High School in 1953, Betty married her high school sweetheart, James Cooper, in May of 1955. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and community throughout their almost 70 years as a married couple. Betty worked as a bookkeeper and later stayed home to raise their two children before finding her true vocation as a piano teacher in 1969.
Her journey as a music educator began with a single piano lesson for the daughter of one for her best friends. Encouraged by the joy it brought her, Betty placed one advertisement in the State Gazette—and never had to advertise again. Word of her talent and warmth spread quickly, and generations of students followed.
Betty was certified through the American College of Musicians and a devoted member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers. In 2000, she was honored with induction into the Guild's "Mythical Hall of Fame," a testament to her excellence and dedication.
In addition to private lessons, Betty was the pianist at local churches, where she served alongside her husband, the church's music director. Together, they shared a love of music that extended into annual Easter and Christmas productions, including original compositions. Betty credited God for her musical gifts and often said, "It's a talent God has given. I give Him all the glory."
She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 70 years, James Cooper; her children, James Jr. "Jimmy" Cooper (Kathy) and Cheryl Bennett (Jeff); her brother Darrell Rutledge; her grandchildren, Edie Catherine Simmons (Bob), Jenny Seratt (Jerry), Emily Bennett Sain (Jay), and Kyle Bennett; her great grandchildren, Ava Seratt, Cooper Seratt, Ella Kate Simmons, Jaycie Sain, and Jay Jr. Sain; her nephews and nieces, Mike Rutledge (Dyanna), Phoebe Rutledge Smith (Steve), Stephen Rutledge (Rosario), and AshLee Rutledge Dornak (Eric), her loving caregiver Linda Mitchell and countless former students whose lives she enriched through music.
A celebration of Betty's life will be held at Dyersburg Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. The public is invited to visit the Cooper Family from 11am until the service begins at 1pm in the Chapel. Graveside service will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Betty Cooper was one of the founding musicians in the DSCC Band. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Dyersburg State Community College. Please memo: Community Band/ Betty Cooper. For more information, please contact Beth Feith at 731-286-3345 or email: feith@dscc.edu
Betty Cooper's legacy lives on in the music she taught, the lives she shaped, and the love she shared so generously.
