Obituary

Basil E. Smith, 87, of Dyersburg, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center.

He was retired as owner of Basil Smith Realty Co., a member of First United Methodist Church for 75 years, a charter member of the Sellers Sunday School Class, a graduate of Murray State University, performed graduate work at Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, was a Kiwanis Club member for 40 years, a board member of McIver's Grant Library, a former member and president of the Dyer County Board of Realtors, a member of the VFW, American Legion and DAV, an avid reader, hunter and fisherman, and was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Phillip Cook and the Rev. Eric Smith officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Smith of Dyersburg; a son, Basil E. "Gene" Smith Jr. and wife, Ginger, of Dyersburg; three grandchildren, Rebecca Cobo and husband, Mario, of Hobe Sound, Fla., the Rev. Eric Smith and wife, Candace, of Curve, and Joseph Smith of Dyersburg; and three great-grandchildren, Isaac Cobo, Sophia Cobo and Roman Cobo.

Pallbearers will be Bill Jordan, Don Smith, Dave Fisher, Ken Coleman, Ralph Lawson and Dusty Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be the Sellers Sunday School Class, Outpost Sunday School Class, and Kiwanis Club members.
